Once the rishi Kashyapa took away the holy Cow of Varuna (Water God) for his sacrificial purpose and though he was requested by Varuna often to return the cow, he did not do that. Angry Varuna cursed Kashyapa to be born on tne earth and his wives would also be born with him and they would go through great perils.
Hearing this, Brahma approached Kashyapa and asked him why he taken over someone else's property and why he was returning it. Seeing Kashyapa not repenting, Brahma asked Kashyapa to be born as a cow herd. Aditi, wife of Kashyapa was cursed that she would loose seven of her children.
Thus Kashyapa was born as Vasudev and his wives Aditi and Diti weres born as Devaki and Rohini.
