I do not remember the year. All I remember is coming home from school and then being told that in the evening we will be going for a movie. An English Movie. The Name : Sound of Music.
In some theater in Delhi we went - the four of us. The musical extravaganza exploded. Julie Andrews singing away, the stern Christopher Plummer and the singing dancing Von Trapp children.
Last Night I saw the movie again, on Star Select. Could not help going back to those days.
Similar movies had been made in Bengali and Hindi. In Bengali, Aparna Sen goes as a governess to Uttam Kumar's nephews and nieces in Jay Jayanti. In the 1970s Indian Cinema, if the romantic ending had to preserved, then the hero could not be shown as married. So nephews and nieces instead of children. And Lolita Chatterjee as the other woman, who had to be bad, unlike the baroness in Sound of Music, who was jealous of Maria but eventually gave way without being bad.
In Hindi they had Parichay. Pran played the grandfather and the romantic pair now became a male teacher and the eldest children in the group, played by Jeetendra and Jaya Bhaduri.
Incidentally while the movies and the drama was nice, it was also nice to note that the movie was based on true incidents written in the book Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria Von Trapp, who started as a governess and later married the Captain.
Turmoil between Germany and Austria was depicted well without showing violence.
A nice movie to watch with some great music and great acting.
Two great songs below.
