Nice movie - Awakening

Saw this movie this weekend. The Awakening.

Loved the movie.

It is a spooky movie and it built the atmosphere well. The kind of spooky movie, where they do not have gory faces - the kind that I like.

Loved everything except the last 20 minutes which I think became a bit predictable.

Overall - Enjoyable.

Clouds are back

We had a few days of sun. Yesterday morning was sunny.
From evening it was cloudy and in the night it rained a bit.

Back to the wet weather again.

Avatars of Vishnu - as per Devi Bhadwad Purana

Vishnu took the incarnation of Dharma; and had two sons , Nara and Narayana. Then, Vishnu was born as Dattatreya, son of Atri Risi. He was then born as Narasimha to kill Hiranyakashipu, as Vamama to defeat Bali. He was then born as Parasurama, then as Rama. Later Vishnu incarnated as Krishna and Arjuna who were Narayana and Nara born again.

Vishwamitra - as per Devi Bhagwad Purana

There was king called Vishwamitra, who one day, while roaming around came across his kingdo, accidentally ended up at the hermitage of rishi Vasistha. The king bowed before the rishi, who invited the king and his followers for a meal. The sage had a cow, Nandini, from whose milk the sage prepared all the food for the king. The king wanted the cow, but the rishi refused to give it away. THe king offered a thousand cows in exchange, even that was refused. He even offered a million cows which was also refused. The king said he would carry the cow over by force.
The king tied a rope around the cow's neck and tried pulling it away. The cows bellowed loudly and two demons were born who attacked and destroyed the king's followers.
Humiliated and dejected, the king went off to the forests where he spent his days in meditation and later became a rishi.

Yesterday - 27th Nov

Got very late yesterday. A few mins before midnight.

Had been to an exhibition and then to a wedding. A Kannada Brahim Wedding Reception of a colleague - to be precise.

Exhibition was nice. It took me 2 hours to reach there and then an hour there, reached the reception around 8PM.

We started dining after greeting the newly wed couple.

Sitting on a table, after having had some paani puri, we were served very little quantities of some vegetables, one roti, one dosa and some rice. There were some sweets. Overall a different experience but very less food for any food gougers.

Last evening - 25 November

When I got home yesterday evening, I saw houses with the led lights on their balconies.
First I thought these Diwali lights, then I saw some houses which did not have lights during Diwali now had lights.
Ok, the lights must be for Guru Nanak - i thought.

I have a Sikh family staying near my house, so I wanted to see if they had lights on. No, their house was like any other day.

Then I figured out, yesterday was Tripuri Purnima.

It said that gods goes to sleep for four months,this is the day when they wake. This is why the Autumn Durga Puja is a akal (untimely) puja.

This is also the day when the Gods celebrate Diwali, as this day Shiva had destroyed Tripura with one single arrow. That is another story.

Some say this is the day Kartikeya killed Tarakasura.

In the south here, people will visit Shiva temples, light up their houses and read the Skanda Purana, which the people here called Kathika Puranam.

Nice sight

After 17-18 days , sun is shining. Nice, warm sun.
After so many days of rain, this is a very welcome change.

Happy Guru Purab - November 25 2015

Today is Guru Purab. Birthday of Guru Nanak.

Happy Guru Purab.

A nice saying from what he said :

There is but One God, His name is Truth, He is the Creator, He fears none, he is without hate, He never dies, He is beyond the cycle of births and death, He is self illuminated, He is realized by the kindness of the True Guru. He was True in the beginning, He was True when the ages commenced and has ever been True, He is also True now.

Born in present day Pakistan, in a place called Rai Bhoi ki Talvandi (nowadays called Nankanasahib) near Lahore, he went on to become the first guru of the Sikhs.

Happy Guru Purab.

Palli Kondeswarar Temple, Surutapalli

This is something interesting I heard today. Palli Kondeswarar Temple, is in Surutapalli. This is in the Chitoor district of Andhra Pradesh. Palli Kondeswarar means sleeping God.

While most Shiva temples have a Shiva Linga which is worshipped, this temple has an idol of Shiva, which is sleeping like Vishnu is showing sleeping.

It is said that when Shiva had drunk Halahal, his throat was burning and he needed some rest. He then rested his head on Parvati's lap. This is the spot where he is supposed to have done that.

Ganesha, Kartikeya, Chandra (Moon) and Surya (Sun) are seen standing around the idol.

Here is a picture of the idol

Record Rain

It seems Bangalore has broken a hundred year record with rains, third week in a row.

Feeling irritated. You can't always be with an umbrella. Last night I got drenched on my way home. What to do if you suddenly get rained on, on the road? I mean, need sometime to open the bag and get the umbrella out.

So much for wishing for rains!!

Tulsi Vivah - Jalandhar, Brinda and Salagram

The Tulsi plant is to be found growing in the courtyard many houses,  worshipped every day. All Hindus, venerate it , even if  they do not actually worship it. No gardener will cut or uproot it, but the leaves may be plucked by day (not after dark) for offerings.
The day set apart for its special worship is the day of, or following, the close of Vishnu's four months'
sleep, when he is married to the Tusli plant. Here is the legend of Brinda and Tulsi
~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
Brinda, wife of Jalandhara, was renowned for her beauty and virtue, the latter being so great that it gave power to her husband, insomuch that Siva, who wished to kill him, could not obtain the mastery over him. Finding his only hope of overcoming the husband was to destroy the wife's virtue, Siva persuaded Vishnu to betray her, which he was only able to compass by going to her in the likeness of her husband.
When she found she had been deceived, Brinda built a pyre and immolated herself upon it. Jalandhara was also killed by Siva. But Vishnu had fallen in love with Vrinda, and was so much distressed at her death that he refused to be comforted until the gods planted a tulasi shrub, and summoned her spirit into it. Since then she is believed to come into the shrub every evening, for the night, leaving it in the morning. This is the reason why the leaves must not be plucked after sunset. On the day preceding that of the festival (which may be celebrated on any day between the eleventh and the fifteenth, though usually on the twelfth) the area where the plant is,  is cleaned and painted and garlanded, while fruit and flowers and all things  necessary for the ceremony are made ready. On the wedding day a fast is kept till evening, when, having bathed and assumed white garments, the  priest brings some emblem of Vishnu to the plant. This may be an image of Vishnu, Balarama, or Krishna, but is frequently is the salagrama stone .
Both the emblem and the plant are washed with warm water and the five amrita (a mixture of milk,
curds, ghee, honey and water). Men's clothing, a sacred cord, and sandal paste are offered to Vishnu, and turmeric, red vermillion, the marriage neck-thread,  to Brinda, with mantras. Then, as in actual marriages, a shawl is held between the two, the officiating priest repeats mantras, and, at a signal, the shawl is dropped and rice showered upon the pair.
The Vishnu emblem is made to touch the plant, a lamp is waved round them for luck, and the marriage is complete. The priest receives a wedding fee and a feast is held. This festival is observed chiefly, but not entirely, by women.
The salagrama is a black stone found in the river Gandaki in Nepal, sometimes pierced with holes, believed to be the work of a legendary worm known as Vajakita. Some say the real stone should be an ammonite, others that it may merely bear the impression of one.
It is sacred to Vishnu, as he is believed to live in it.  It takes the place of a Vishriu image at the will of the worshipper, and is frequently used in the marriage with the tulasi plant .
Some say only Brinda's hair only which became that plant, her body became the river
Gandaki, which gives the connection between the plant and the stone.
Tulsi Vivah - from the local Folk Tales
This is something that I heard here, and wanted to share.
When Tulsi was blessed by Narayana, she shed her mortal form and went to heaven where she was welcomed by the Goddesses.
After sometime, Saraswati started feeling uncomfortable with Tulsi being around. One day things became serious when in a fit of rage, Saraswati struck Tulsi. Tulsi vanished.
Feeling that if Tulsi remained in heaven, she may have to face more quarrels, Narayana told her to take her plant form and reside on earth.
Narayana blessed her saying without her leaves, his worship would not be complete.
~~~~~~~~~~

There is similar tale of Jalandhar who was married to Brinda, and how Brinda became a plant later.

They all end as Vishnu become a Shalagram stone and become united with Tulsi.

Yesterday, November 23 2015 was the day of Tulsi Vivah. This was also the day for the commencement of the wedding season.

Legend of Sakhachuda - From the Devi Purana

Yesterday, November 23, was the day for Tulsi Vivah here. I had heard of Jalandhar and Tulsi, but the Sankachuda story was new. Searching through the Devi Purana, I found this.

There was a pious king called Dharmadhwaja.He and his wife Madhavi had a beautiful daughter Tulsi. When Tulsi was a young woman, she left and went to the Badrika where she started meditating on Narayana to get him as her husband.
In her earlier birth she had been a Gopi in Gokula who desired to have Krishna for herself. She had been cursed to be born as a mortal woman. Radha had cursed her as love for Krishna was without physical attachment. Sudama, friend of Krishna had witnessed this cursing and had told Radha that her curse was justified. Furious, Radha had cursed Sudama to be born as Sankhachuda, a demon.
When Brahma appeared before Tulsi and asked what she wanted, Tulsi said she wanted Narayana as her husband. Brahma said Sudama had wanted her and as the demon Sankhachuda he still desired her. Meeting the demon, Tulsi discovered that she too liked him and the two got married.

Like other demons, Sankhachuda also attacked the Gods and tried to take over the heavens. He had an invincible armour called Sarvamangala, that was protecting him, As long he wore that, he was invincible. It had been given to him by Narayana, who had been pleased by the demon's meditation.

The only way Sankhachuda could be killed was if his wife lost her chastity. That would destroy the armour.

Narayana (Vishnu) approached Tulsi, when Sankhachuda was himself in the battlefield with Bhadrakali. He first prayed to Shiva and Bhadrakali and then taking their blessing started the war. In the meanwhile, seeing Narayana in front of her, Tulsi lost herself and Sankhachuda's armour was weakened.
Narayana went back to the battle field and there Shiva struck Sankhachuda.
Taking the appearance of the demon, Narayana then approached Tulsi. Tulsi wanted to know all from whom she thought, was her husband. Later realising something was not right, she wanted to know who he was. Then when Narayana revelaed himself, Tulsi cursed him to become a stone.
Vishnu (Narayana) then blessed her saying she will be born as a plant, Tulsi, and no worship of Vishnu would be complete without the leaves of Vishnpriya or Tulsi.
Narayana was then transformed a part of himself as a Shalgram stone.

Reliving a memory - Sound of Music

I do not remember the year. All I remember is coming home from school and then being told that in the evening we will be going for a movie. An English Movie. The Name : Sound of Music.

In some theater in Delhi we went - the four of us. The musical extravaganza exploded. Julie Andrews singing away, the stern Christopher Plummer and the singing dancing Von Trapp children.

Last Night I saw the movie again, on Star Select. Could not help going back to those days.

Similar movies had been made in Bengali and Hindi. In Bengali, Aparna Sen goes as a governess to Uttam Kumar's nephews and nieces in Jay Jayanti. In the 1970s Indian Cinema, if the romantic ending had to preserved, then the hero could not be shown as married. So nephews and  nieces instead of children. And Lolita Chatterjee as the other woman, who had to be bad, unlike the baroness in Sound of Music, who was jealous of Maria but eventually gave way without being bad.

In Hindi they had Parichay. Pran played the grandfather and the romantic pair now became a male teacher and the eldest children in the group, played by Jeetendra and Jaya Bhaduri.

Incidentally while the movies and the drama was nice, it was also nice to note that the movie was based on true incidents written in the book Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria Von Trapp, who started as a governess and later married the Captain.

Turmoil between Germany and Austria was depicted well without showing violence.

A nice movie to watch with some great music and great acting.

Two great songs below.

Getting Sick of Rain now

Its now 2 weeks at a stretch since its been raining. Non stop. Its not heavy, but enough to wet you.
This gloomy weather is nice for a few days, but 2 weeks!!

And it may rain tomorrow morning again.

Work and Chicken

I got a call around 10:30. 10:25 to be exact.
Call from work on weekends are bad. And I was out in departmental store with Dad.
Got home and started around 12:30.

Boy O Boy. I wrapped this up around 9PM.
No lunch - nothing.
Dad also - he had biscuits / chips.

I had a break around 6:30 which meant get dinner ready.

In the morning I had got some chicken. Afternoon maid had chopped some onions.

So in a pan heated some mustard oil and ghee. Then added onions and ginger garlic paste.
Then chopped tomatoes and a chopped potato.

Added some turmeric, red pepper, shahi jeera, coriander powder and let it fry a bit.
Then added the chicken. Let that fry for a bit. Added the drumsticks which I had not added with the chicken and also added the liver.
2 minutes and I added salt and water.

When the water was boiling, added some garam masala and ghee and a chopped tomato, covered the pot and heat went to low. Told dad to stir it every 5 minutes and I was back in the call.

After 10 minutes I came and shut the gas.

Night it was Chicken and Rice. And it tasted good.

Birth of Urvashi - Devi Bhagwat Purana

Nara and Narayana were two great sages who were meditating on the himalayas. For years they meditated, so powerful was their meditation that the atmosphere became warm. Indra, thinking they wanted to take over his throne thought he needed to do something to break their meditation. He sent ferocious animals to break their penance, but that had no effect. Indra then called Kama, God of love and asked him to do something. Kama decided to send some apsaras to entice the meditating sages.

Kama created spring. The air was warm, birds flying and flowers blooming. Apsaras started singing and dancing. Disturbed, the sages woke up. Seeing the untimely season of spring and the apsaras dancing, the sages understood it was the work of Indra.

To challenge the apsaras and Indra, the sages then struck their things (Uru) and from there sprung a beautiful woman. Born from their things, she was Urvashi.

Incarnations of Vasudeva (Krishna's father), Devaki and Rohini (As per Devi Bhagwat Purana)

Once the rishi Kashyapa took away the holy Cow of Varuna (Water God) for his sacrificial purpose and though he was requested by Varuna often to return the cow, he did not do that. Angry Varuna cursed Kashyapa to be born on tne earth and his wives would also be born with him and they would go through great perils.

Hearing this, Brahma approached Kashyapa and asked him why he taken over someone else's property and why he was returning it. Seeing Kashyapa not repenting, Brahma asked Kashyapa to be born as a cow herd. Aditi, wife of Kashyapa was cursed that she would loose seven of her children.

Thus Kashyapa was born as Vasudev and his wives Aditi and Diti weres born as Devaki and Rohini.

Background

Changed the background. Will see how this looks

Bad Days

Yesterday was a bad day. A lot of work, and some has even spilled over to today.
By the time I wrapped up my meeting it was past 10. Then it was cooking time. Chopped Bhindi and fried it.
Rice and Dal in the microwave.
Food was ready around 11:30.
So eventually I got to bed this morning and up and back to work.

Annual appraisal discussions in progress.

Cricket washed out

Its still raining. Not heavy, but raining.
Its like a nice spray on you, you will get wet - but like the spray.

Cricket doesn't love this. So finally they called off the series.
Wondering if they could have done this earlier. Rain was predicted much earlier.

Ridged Gourd fry - Jhinge bhaja

Last night I was delayed at work. I left around 8:25 and reached home around 9.
Needed something fast to cook.

Dad had called in the afternoon asking what to cook - tough to think when you are at work. Evening (rather night) at 9PM, I asked him to skin some jhinge.

I am not sure what they call it here in the local language. In Hindi, they call it Jhinga Tori. For me, buying it, means pointing and taking. And the size - in Delhi/ Kolkata, if they see a big jhinge it means its old and fibrous, and cannot be eaten.

Here it is different. The smallest one is probably 2 feet in length. And seedless.
People here snap the vegetable into two and based on how it looks inside they buy it. Not sure if they want a soft inside or a hard one.

What I did was chop the vegetable into bite size pieces. Chopped two onions.
In a hot wok, I heated some mustard oil, and then added some fenugreek seeds (methi). When the seeds were crackling in hot oil, I added the onion. When the onions were translucent, I added the vegetable. When it started releasing water, I lowered the flame, added salt and turmeric and chopped green chillies and let that fry.

And while this was cooking, I washed some rice and cooked that in the microwave.

Dinner done.

Worship of Kartik

Yesterday was the last day of the Bengali month of Kartik. That was also the day for Kartik Puja.

This is incidentally a puja which is not very common in Bengal.

Kartik Puja is, if I am not mistaken, done in Bengal by women who do not have children.

I have heard of stories of quarrels between women, and to show spite, one will leave an idol of Kartik on the porch of the other person. When this is done, the other person has to do the worship.

I have not seen any pandals etc for the worship. The only worship that I have heard of, is of the women in the West Bengal Red Light areas - where the women who do not have any children, pray to Kartik.

Jagaddhatri Puja - November 18 2015

From Wednesday 18th November, Bengal starts the worship of the mother goddess in the form of JagadDhatri - the holder of the world.

I could not find any references to this goddess in the Puranas that I was able to browse through, but the Tantra texts have reference to this Goddess.

She is three-eyed and has four arms. In her two right hands she holds a discus and an arrow, and in her left hands she has a bow and a few arrows. She is clothed in red. She is riding a lion and has killed an elephant in a fight. So far, I could not find any references to the war in the puranas, but search continues. While Durga is seen killing the demon, Jagadhatri is usually depicted sitting, letting the lion do the killing part.

This goddess is probably the Mahamaya devi, who has references in the Mahamaya Tantra. Not many temples exist for this goddess. I came one reference - in Balagarh, in Chinsura, Hooghly.

This devi also goes by the following names :  Karindrasuranisudini (Slayer of the Elephant Demon, Karindrasura), Maheswari (the Great Goddess), Shaktacharpriya (the Goddess who loves to be worshiped as according to the practices of the Sakta ), Adharabhuta (the Bearer of the World).

Sri Ramakrishna had said that is the Goddess who controlling the mind, which is like a mad elephant.

Worship of this goddess dates back to eighteenth century Bengal, where the first documented evidences of the worship are found.

As per the tantra texts, she comes into prominence after Durga had killed the buffalo demon. The Gods, who had given their weapons to Durga to kill the demon, thought it was because of the weapons that the demon was killed. Fighting among themselves, they were made to realize that it is JagadDhatri, who upholds the world and it she, whose power brought about the death of the buffalo demon.

Like Durga represents the Raja Guna, and Kali represents the Tama Guna, this devi represents the Satva Guna.

Light drizzle today

So far light drizzle. In a vehicle, it took me over an hour to cross 2 kilometes. Traffic!!!

Lets see if cricket happens today

Lalita takes a new form

Lalita, the goddess, is referred to in the Vamakeshvara Tantra and Tantraraja Tantra texts.

Lalita means She Who Plays. All creation, manifestation and dissolution is considered to be a play of Devi or the goddess. Mahatripurasundari is her name as transcendent beauty of the three cities, a description of the goddess as conqueror of the three cities of the demons, or as the triple city (Tripura).

In the Tantrarajatantra it is said, Lalita took a male form as Krishna and then proceeded to enchant women. In this work, Krishna has six forms, identified with the six senses (including Mind). They are Kamaraja Gopala, Manmatha Gopala, Kandarpa Gopala, Makaraketana Gopala and Manobhava Gopala.

The Kalivilasa Tantra, a Bengali work, states Krishna was born as the son of Devi who was golden (Gauri) and turned black when he was excited by passion. In the Todala Tantra, each of the ten Mahavidyas, forms of the supreme Goddess, has her own male counterpart and here Krishna is said to be the spouse of Kali. There are many images of Krishna in India which show him as black. An Indian commentator to the hymn to Kali called Karpuradistotra, goes further and says that there is a connection between the bija mantra of Kali which is Krim, Krishna and Christ. Whatever the truth of that identification, it is certain that to many ordinary folk in India, Krishna and Christ do have a resonance. Often you will see contemporary images of Krishna and Christ together in the inside of houses. Krishna (and his tantrika counterpart Kameshvara) are moved by love (prem).

Sun God and his sister - Chhath Puja

Chhath has started. People in East UP / Bihar will be praying to Sun God and his sister.
Vedic literature talks of Savita. Savita could be pronounced with emphasis on the A as Savitaa or as Savit. This becomes synonymous with one single deity - the Sun. Later ages, Savita took the form of a female deity and got her place as sister of Surya.
In the Puranas, Savita is described as a golden female, who has golden hair, golden face and golden eyes. Somewhere, I think, this is the deity that became known as Chhathi , who is worshipped along with the Sun during Chhath Puja.

Surya or the Sun has a very prominent place as a supreme God in the Vedas. He is the source of all energy. In east UP and Bihar, it is said that the universe is a pond on which the Sun travels in all directions. Flowing water is thus considered sacred and as a path of the moving Sun, is worshiped.

Fairs are held and people go knee deep in rivers to offer their tribute to the Sun and his sister. There are different offerings made on different days.

Day one I was told, people will offer and then have lauki bhaat - rice and gourd.
Day two will kheer puri - rice pudding and fried what bread.
There are two more days and I am not too sure what they have on those two days, which I will need to find out.

I think on one of the days, they offer thekua, a dry bihari sweet, probably on the third day, and ginger is offered on the fourth day.

This is incidentally one festival, where the women have a bigger role to play.

Happy Chhath to All.

Nidhiram Sardar - Bengali Arsene Lupin

I saw this movie yesterday after years. I remembered the basic story but wanted to watch it again.

This was a movie that was directed by Rabi Ghosh. As Rabi had acted in a many Satyajit Ray movies, I had expected some of that sensibility in this.

A bit of background. Arsene Lupin in a French Thief. Like Robin Hood, he robs from the rich only. Unlike Hood, he steals for fun, and not to help the poor.

Here Nidhiram does help the poor - one instance is shown of the character dropping envelopes of cash in houses.

The suspense never got built and actors like Aparna Sen and Utpal Dutt were wasted. Some action would have been great.

Aparna Sen did not have much to do except act scared and confused. Nandita Bose, who had left Bengali films to work in Malayalam films in the 70s, had a bigger role than the main lead. And all she did was dance away - literally in songs that were not needed.

Overall, nice watch for Uttam Kumar (who also is not there in most of the film) , Utpal Dutt and Ajitesh Banerjee.

Raining Non Stop

So its still raining. Not heavy , but enough to spoil things. It would have been nice, if I had a rainy day off. But no luck.

Bad traffic in the morning. Managed to get a bus to work today. I did not even think of walking to work. Mud and potholes and vehicles splashing.

Nag Nathaiya

On the fourth day of the Hindu month of Kartik, Nag Nathaiya is celebrated. This is popular in UP and Bihar, more so in UP.

Bhai Dooj was the second day, so leave a day from then, and the day after is Nag Nathaiya.

Not sure if the ISKCON people celebrate this or not, but this is related to an antic of Krishna.

When the Kaliya the snake was poisoning the waters of Yamuna, Krishna got on top of the hood of Kaliya, and danced. This is the celebration of Nag Nathaiya.

This also indicates it is time for Chhath puja, a very prominent festival among people in Bihar and Jharkhand.

Bless the remote - Prem Ratan Dhan Payo

Thank God for the Fast Forward button.

The Fast forward that forwards a video and lets me skip the boring, non interesting parts.

So today afternoon I got a not so bad print of PRDP - as people are calling Prem Ratan Dhan Payo.
Now I am not sure why I started watching this, in the first place. Probably expected senseless entertainment. And for that you need a pace, that is missing.

No great acting, good actors wasted.

A prisoner of Zenda kind of film - two look alikes, step brother, wicked uncle etc.

Watch if you are a die hard fan of Salman Khan, else figure out something better to do.

Some positives : Great sets, nice looking people in the movie

Movie watching continues

After Sabyasachi . saw Goyenda Gogol. Not a bad movie. Not the greatest one. Trying to put in modern technology in places, it did not do justice to the young detective, Gogol, created by Samaresh Basu.

After watching Sabyasachi, I am looking for the book, Pather Dabi - original or an english translation. The book on which the movie was based.

Weather and memories

When I stepped out to get some bread early morning, I was greeted by a light spray of rain on my face. Reminded me of the weather in San Francisco. Along with this I used to have the fog come in, that is missing here.

Feeling sorry for the cricket fans. Doubt if today's match will happen.

ReWatching a 60s Classic

Saw the 60s classic WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE. Nice movie, Great stars, Nice enjoyment

The French Arsene Lupin that I saw after that - well not that great. I have been a fan of Arsene and his antics, and while the fun part was there, too many people here, spoiled the story.

Now watching Sabyasachi - Uttam Kumar Supriya movie.

Bhaier Kopale Dilam Phota, Jomer Duare porlo Kaata - Bhai Dooj/ Bhai Phonta - Day Five of Diwali

Two days after Diwali, is what in North India is called Bhai Dooj and in Bengal, is called Bhai Phonta. This year, the date is Friday 13th November 2015. The bengali verse (in the title) is what the sisters recite when they put a dot on their brother's forehead.
Some also refer to this as Bhatri Dwitiya and some call it Yama Dwitiya.
Dwitiya, as this the second day after the new moon, and Bhai / Bhatri for brother.

Two days after Kali Puja is used as Bhai Phota Day  in West Bengal .
Bhai Phota happens in Shukla Paksha and in Kartik month every Bengali year.

Bhai means Brother, and Phota means Dot so putting the dot on the brother's forehead is the day of Bhai Phota. Also as this happens on the second day after Amavasya (Dooj), this is also called Bhai Dooj.

The detailed verse is here :

“ Bhaier kapale dilam phonta,
Jamer Duare porlo kanta,
Jamuna Dae Jomke phonta,
Ami di amar bhaike phonta,
Bhai jeno hoy lohar vata.”

which means –
“on my brother's forehead I put the mark,
Death's door are now closely crossed
Yamuna applies the mark on Yama
While I give the mark to my brother
Let my brother be as tough as Iron”

The ritual is simple. The sister makes the brother sit cross legged on a mat, on the floor. She then lights a lamp. A paste made specially for this day, is put on their brother's forehead. The paste normally created using Sandal paste, Kumkum,;Vermilion and Curd.  Sisters pray for long  and healthy life for their brothers by giving them blessings using a special verse (mentioned above). Sisters arrange various types of sweets and snacks for their siblings after applying the Tilak and then break their fasting of Bhai Phota. If the sister is elder, the brother takes this as a blessing, and if this is a younger sister, then as a token of love.

The sister traditionally recites the verse three times and then washes his hand and serves an exclusive lunch where fish, meat and other vegetables dishes waits for the brother.

Legends say, Yamuna is said to have performed this for the first time for her brother, Yama, on this day.

Yama, the god of Death had not visited his sister Yamuna for 12 years. Yamuna, the goddess of Yamuna river, was sad and consulted Ganga, the goddess of Ganga river. Ganga reminded Yama of his sister, upon which Yama visits her. Yamuna was overjoyed to see her brother, and prepared a bounty of food for Yama. The god Yama was delighted, and asked Yamuna what she wanted for gift. She wished that he, her brother should return and see her again soon. Yama was moved by his sister's love, agreed and to be able to see her again, made river Yamuna immortal.

This ends the five day celebration of Diwali.

Something sweet at home - for Diwali

Had some grated coconut at home which had started turning bad. Had to either throw it, or consume it.
Tried something for the first time. Had seen Mom make it before, first time I tried it.

In a wok, added some oil. Of late with the discount I am getting, have switched over to Rice Bran oil.

When the oil was slightly hot, near smoking, added the coconut. When the coconut was nearly brown, added some sugar and let that fry.

When the mixture was light brown in color, added some milk, enough to just make it wet and kept stirring it. When the mixture was brown, added some raisins and turned off the heat.

Coconut itself will release oil, so not too much oil was needed. I had made this on Tuesday and it tasted better yesterday, once I had microwaved it for 3 - 4 minutes.

If I form balls, it becomes a naru, if I shape it into squares, it becomes a barfi. It is in the pan, by itself. What should I call this? This tastes like the coconut filling that is put in sweets, except that this is cooked a bit more.

Bali Pratipada and Gujarati New Year Day - Day Four of Diwali

Bali Pratipada is performed on the day after Diwali. Bali Puja coincides with Govardhan Puja. While Govardhan Puja is dedicated to Govardhan hills and Lord Krishna, Bali Puja is performed to seek blessings of asura Bali.

Due to boon bestowed by Vishnu in his Vamana avatar, Bali is worshipped in India during Diwali. Bali was pushed to Patala by Vamana, but due to generosity of the king Bali, Vishnu allowed him three days to visit Bhulok (i.e. the earth). It is believed that  Bali resides on the earth for three days and blesses his devotees during these days.

In Kerala, king Bali is worshipped during Onam and the concept of Onam is same as that of Bali Puja in other parts of India.

For the brahmin families in Karnataka, today is the day when they will worship Bali, Lakshmi and Vishnu.

Today also happens to be the new year day for the Gujarati community.

Govardhan Puja - Day Four of Diwali

Govardhan Puja, also called Annakut (meaning a heap of grain), is celebrated as the day Krishna defeated Indra by lifting the Govardhan hill.This is the fourth day of Deepawali (Diwali), the Hindu festival of lights.

On this day the inhabitants of Vrindavan  would hold a harvest festival in honor of  Indra, who provided the rains essential for the harvest.
Krishna convinced the inhabitants of Vrindavan to honor Govardhan Hill instead, whose fertile soil provided the grass upon which the cows and bulls grazed, and to honor the cows and bulls who provided milk and tilled the lands. Outraged, Indra retaliated with terrifying thunderstorms. Krishna, calmly lifted Govardhan Hill with the little finger of his left hand. For seven days and seven nights Krishna held up Govardhan Hill, providing a giant umbrella to shelter the inhabitants of Vrindavan from the torrential rain. Realizing the futility of his actions, Indra bowed down before Krishna and offered prayers of supplication.

To celebrate this festival, devotees build a replica of Govardhan Hill made of various opulent foods, worship Lord Krishna as the lifter of Govardhan Hill, worship the hill as His incarnation, and worship the cows and bulls who are dear to the Lord.

At the end of the festival, the hill ofbhog is distributed to the public.

On this auspicious day the people prepare fifty-six (chhappan bog) or one hundred and eight different varieties of delicious dishes to offer Krishna as 'Bhog'. In the temples, specifically in Mathura , the deities are given milk bath, dressed in new shining attires and decorated with ornaments of dazzling diamonds, pearls, rubies and other precious stones and metals. Then they are worshiped, offered prayers and bhajans and also offered delicious sweets, fruits and eatables that are ceremoniously raised in the form of a mountain before the idols. This is also the day when the King Bali is supposed to come and greet his subjects. While Kerala celebrates this as Onam on a different date, in other parts of the country, this day is also known as 'Bali Padyami'.

There is a custom in which on this holy day the wife applies the 'Tilak' on the forehead of her husband, garlands him, performs his 'Aarti' and also prays for his long life. Then the husband gives her a gift in appreciation of all the tender care that his wife showers on him. This is called Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra and is festival of celebrations and respect of love and devotion between the wife and the husband. People invite their newly married daughters with their husbands on this day of Gudi Padwa for special meals and give them gifts.

Some people consider this day as the appearance day of the earth in the form of a cow. So, it is celebrated as birthday or as a special day of cows.  As a mark of respect, we worship cow and offer them fresh grass and food on this day.

Bangalore Diwali

It has been raining non stop since Sunday night.
Temperatures have dropped making it nice.

Today traffic wasn't much so manageable.

But the roads!! All dug up, hardly walk able or drive able. If you are walking, chances you will get splashed, are very high. And if you are driving, you cannot see the potholes so not sure where you may end up.

So much for Diwali !!

Firecrackers and Diwali

Who burst the first firecracker? Historically gunpowder did not exist till the Chinese invented it, so probably before the 13th century there was a different mode of fireworks. Burning of different resins caused a lot of smoke and some light. Pieces of bamboo when lit and thrown skywards could burn and also create a popping sound due to the hidden air pockets inside.

There may be a scientific reason behind the fireworks. They cause smoke which kills most of the insects which come up and breed at this time of the year, especially mosquitoes.

~~~~~~~~~~
Leave the reasoning behind.
Have fun. Have a Happy and Safe Diwali.
Music of Kali
Kali is dark. So she is called Shyama.
An entire genre of Bengali devotional songs dedicated to Kali and is called Shyama Sangeet.
So many poets have to please the Goddess with their music.
Shyama Sangeet has a history, older than Kali Puja in Bengal. Kali has been revered for long in Bengal. There are some instances of devotional music written in praise of Kali, which were written sometime in the 12th or 13th century.In the 16th century there is one example of Chandi Mangal Kabya (also called Kavikangal Chandi) by Mukundaram Chakraborty. Written in Panchali style, it is an ode to the holy Mother.
Ramprasad Sen, the poet tried to free the devotion to Kali from the Tantra form and tried giving it a simpler touch. That resulted in the loving form of Kali come across.  He wanted to rid the society of the cult  in the name of worshipping Kali and to establish in its place a musical representation of the relationship of eternal and sublime love and care between the mother and her child.
Recognized as one of the greatest poets in India, he shared the spirit of devotional surrender, expressing a yearning so powerful, and at times so heart-wrenching, that listeners were inspired to renounce all selfish concerns and worldly attachments.
Many of Ramprasad's songs have been lost. Some famous notes by him are: Man Re Krishi Kaaj Jaano Na (O mind, do you not know cultivation?), Dub Dere Mon Kali Bole (dive deep, o mind, in the name of Kali), Ebaar Kali Tomaye Khabo (Now I will eat you Kali) . These songs have been always popular in Bengal.
In the late 18th century Bengal came Kamalakanta Bhattacharya who wrote many songs in priase of Kali.
In early 19th century Bengali came Dasharathi Ray who began singing in the kabiyal style but did not like the debates that took place. He then took to writing in the panchali style and became famous.  One very popular song of his is Dosh Karo Noye Go Maa, sung by Panna Lal Bhattacharya
Trailokyanath Sanyal, Dvijendralal Ray, Nabai Moyra, Bireshvar Chakravarti, and Kalidas Bhattacharya are among a large number of mid-nineteenth century literary types (not necessarily practicing devotees) who adopted the Kali-song genre as one poetic form among the many that they experimented with. While some refined the style to conform to elite urban tastes, others among them appropriated the image of the mother goddess as a nationalist symbol of India. Poetry sung to different kinds of highly developed musical forms was a chief source of entertainment for urban Bengalis in the nineteenth century, and Kali songs entered the general repertoire.
(Aamaye De Ma Pagol Kore - Trailokyanath Sanyal)
Nabai Moyra, who was Vaishnav wrote beautiful poems between the similarities of Shyam (Krishna) and Kali. He is telling the mother goddess to discard the sword and take up a flute, dance like Krishna.
Nazrul composed some songs which are part of Shyama Sangeet. Unlike other poets referring to Kali as the mother, Nazrul referred to Kali as the daughter.
Tagore has also composed songs in praise of Kali. In Balmiki Pratibha, Valmiki sings songs in praise of Kali.
There have been many poets who have written songs in praise of Kali but I want to mention Pannalal Bhattacharya. Brother of Dhananjay Bhattacharya, the singer, Pannalal made Shyama Sangeet famous in the 20th century.
Pannalal developed a special style of singing with devotion. His distinct singing voice and his devotional spirit have melted the hearts of countless devotees of Kali across Bengal. He became a great devotee of Kali and always remained engrossed in her thoughts. At the young age of 36, he committed suicide as he did not get the vision of Kali.
Birth of Kali and killing of Raktabija - Kali Puja Second / Third Day of Diwali
Kali Puja is celebrated in eastern India on Diwali. While in many parts of India, Lakshmi is worshiped, Kali's worship on the day of Diwali is of great importance.
It is said, as per Devi Mahatmayam, this is the day, when Kali appeared and killed Raktabija.
In the fight that was ensuing between Durga and the demons, there appeared a demon, called Raktabija.
Kali is called Bhadrakali in the south of India, and is said to have emerged from the third eye of Shiva and had killed the demon, Darika.
Kali shows the need for discrimination and dispassion and that good and evil arise from the same source and to spiritually progress we must overcome the terrible and violent side of life.
~~~~~~~~~~~

Here is the story of Kali's birth, from Devi Mahatmayam. This story appears in the seventh chapter and continues to the next chapter where Raktabija is killed.

Shumbha commanded Chanda and Munda, his worriers to go and capture the goddess. The demons went to the battle field, where the Goddess Ambika was resting, on her lion. Instead of talking to her, the asuras attacked from all sides. Angry, the goddess frowned.

From her frowning forehead emerged a female figure. This figure had a sword in one hand, and a noose in the other. Clad in a dress made of the skin of the leopard, she was clad in jewels made from bones. Her was skinny herself and looked like a skeleton. She looked scary - her face was larger in proportion to her body and her tongue was jutting out of her mouth, Her eyes were sunken and she was making a noise that was creating disturbance in the atmosphere.

Increasing her size, this being started catching and gulping down the asuras. This was Kali.

Kali then rushed towards Chanda and Munda. The asuras seeing the goddess, attacked her. Kali started laughing, her teeth shining like thunder bolts. Catching Chanda, and utter "Hum" she cut his head off, with her sword. She then killed Munda similarly.

Ambika, pleased with her feat gave the goddess the name of Chamunda and Chandika. This killing of Chanda and Munda is celebrated during Sandhi Puja of Durga Puja, in Bengal.

 Hearing this, Shumbha, the king of demons asked his army to kill the Goddess who was destroying his able warriors.

Hearing him, the army attacked the Goddess. Seeing the army attack, the Goddess strung her bow sting. The noise was deafening. Her lion started roaring. The goddess then started ringing the bell she was holding in one of her hands.

Kali then attacked the army. With only Ambika and Kali fighting the other gods, let their female forms join the fight. From Brahma emerged Brahmani, sitting on a swan. Shiva's female form came next, sitting on a bull. This was Maheswari. Kartikeya's female form, Kartikeyi came next sitting on a peacock. Then came Vishnu's form, in the form a female boar, called Varahi. A form called Narasinghi came looking like a half lion, half woman, Then came Vaishnavi, female form of Vishnu. Then came Indra's form called Aindri, sitting on an elephant.

All these goddess then started fighting and attacked the army. Meanwhile Ambika asked Shiva to go as her messenger and ask Shumbha and Nishumba to surrender. In this form, the Goddess is also called Shivadooti, as she had asked Shiva to go as her 'doot' (messenger).

As guessed, Shumbha and Nishumbha refused and the war took a fierce form. Seeing the goddess attacking, Raktabija came to the battlefield. Raktabija had a boon that whenever a drop of his blood fell on the ground, a duplicate Raktabija would be born at that spot (rakta=blood, bija=seed; "he for whom each drop of blood is a seed").

Raktabija attacked Aindri. The goddess hurled her bolt at the asura. Wounded, Raktabija began bleeding. Each drop of blood then started giving rise to a clone. As more weapons were hurled at the demon, each drop of blood gave rise to a replica. Soon the battlefield was full of many Raktqabijas fighting. Seeing this Kali went on the field and started gulping down the Raktabija replicas. When only one was left, Ambika attacked the asura with her trident, and Kali swallowed all the flowing blood. Raktabija was dead.

Kali became mad with blood lust after this incident. She started dancing the dance of destruction and forgot that She had already killed Raktabija. She kept on slaying the innocent after that. Seeing this, the Gods became extremely worried and approached Lord Shiva for help. Only Shiva had the power to stop Kali at this stage. So, Lord Shiva went and lay down among the corpses where the Goddess was dancing. Accidentally, Kali stepped on Shiva and soon She realized Her mistake. It is then Her tongue immediately came out of embarrassment and She calmed down. She was ashamed that Her blood lust had prevented Her from recognizing Her own husband. Thus, She came back to Her original form and the destruction was stopped. Shiva lying at Kali's feet also symbolizes the supremacy of Nature over man. It clearly shows that without Kali or Shakti even a powerful force like Lord Shiva is inert. Hence, Kali is shown as stepping on Shiva's chest.

~~~~~~~~~~
Kali teaches that pain, sorrow, decay, death, and destruction are not overcome by denying or explaining them away. These are inevitable parts of life and denying them is futile. For us to realize the fullness of our being and to realize our potential, we must accept these parts of existence. Kali's gift is freedom. The freedom of the child to revel in the moment, obtained only after confrontation with or acceptance of death. Kali is Mother, not because She protects us from the way things are, but because She reveals our mortality to us and releases us to act fully and freely; She releases us from the web of pretense, practicality and rationality.
Of all the Devi forms, Kali is the most compassionate because She provides liberation to Her devotees. A soul who engages in spiritual practice to remove the illusion of the ego sees Mother Kali as sweet, affectionate, and overflowing with love for Her children, as was seen in the case of Shri Ramakrishna.
Deepawali - Day Three of Diwali
There are legends of Deepawali, Legends assocaiated with Kali killing Raktabija, Kali's birth, birth of Lakshmi, marriage of Lakshmi and so on.
Marriage of Lakshmi - Frpm the eighth canto of Shrimad Bhagwad Puran
Goddess Ramaa (Rama or Ramah) appeared , who was the goddess of wealth. Her appearance was a splendour of a thousand bolts of lightning.  Men, gods, and demons at once paid her their worshipful tributes for they knew that a pleased goddess brought mountains of gold and fortune to the devotees. They sought her Grace and glance, for she sparkled with heavenly comeliness, youth, noble conduct, and beautiful complexion. Though she was young, she was mother goddess. Every one of them showered gifts on her, for her grace assured humongous returns. Indra brought her the most beautiful throne.  Ganges was not far behind; she brought what is most sacred to all—that is herself in gold jar for her ablutions. Mother Earth was competing with others and brought herbs for her ablutions.  The cows were thumping and chomping grass to get her out of the way quickly, because they were impatient to get an audience with mother goddess. They brought the most precious products necessary for sacrifice: milk, curds, ghee , cow dung and urine. Spring moved in front of the line with grace, beauty and vernal colours and gave Her leaves, buds, flowers and fruits—a basket of cheer and smiles. The Rishis brought what they knew best: procedures, protocols, rules, injunctions, regulations, and rites that She should  follow in her ablutions. The  Gandharvas (celestial  musicians) next in line saw their chance to goad the Rishis out of their way with their musical instruments, started singing and dancing before their time and drummed the Rishis out of the audience hall; the mother goddess received them with enchanting smiles. The Apsaras came along dancing and singing and enjoyed a second-time audience with Rama. Suddenly there were flashes, the earth shook, the musicians were thrown off balance, thunderclaps came from sky, and yes, clouds were paying respects to the gracious goddess. Drums , conches, flutes and lutes made a tumultuous entry.  Earth was wobbling and spinning with tremors and wondered when they will stop the racket. Then came the lumbering elephants; they were the guardians of the four quarters. The Brahmanas knew it was time to chant the hymns. The elephants drew up the sacred Ganges water into their trunks and bathed Sri (Rama) who held a lotus in one of her hands. The ocean from which she emerged gave her two yellow silk shawls, the color and material that Vishnu liked most. Varuna, the god of water, gave her Vaijayanti, a garland of flowers, swarming with drunk bees, some of which were literally drowning in the nectar. Visvakarma, a Lord of created beings and divine architect of the universe gave her many beautiful rare ornaments.  Sarasvati, the goddess of learning and speech gave her a necklace of pearls. Brahma, the creator, gave her a lotus flower; the Nagas, the serpent-demons, chose a pair of earrings for gifting her.
   A swarm of black bees came out of nowhere and buzzed around a wreath of lotus flowers in the hand of Sri. Her face showed no weariness; it lit up with a smile playing on her lips, earrings caressing her tender cheeks. She moved about like a vine in the gentle wind. There was a gentle and sweet aroma in the air, there was no mistaking it was sandal paste, soon the aroma was becoming more intense and there it was painted on the breasts of Sri, which were round and symmetrical embracing each other gently. There was saffron too keeping company with the sandal paste. Her torso soon tapered into a slender waist which moved like a vine in the wind. As she passed in a motionless grace, her anklets jingled and she moved like a shining golden creeper among the Ghandharvas, Yakshas, Asuras, Siddhas, poets, and gods with the splendor of lightning, eyeing them all the time all around without giving a clue that their every being was scrutinized and put to test. She was looking for a consort who was free from any blemish, who is eternal, and whose virtues are beyond reproach.
Thoughts and emotions were jostling in her mind; externally she was cool as the fresh spring water. This ascetic, what a laugh, has no control over his anger. Look at this sage; he is wise, though it (his wisdom) is not free from attachment.   Her choice was Lord Vishnu. He grants Mukti; his virtues are eternal; he is beyond the gunas: Sattva, Rajas and Tamas; everyone desires him, but he is disinterested.  Lakshmi  placed a wreath of newly blossomed lotuses, swarming with inebriated black bees, on the shoulders of the Lord and stood by his side with utmost charm, beauty, poise, bashfulness, and divinity, casting glance on the Lord and waiting for his approval. Her eyes bloomed with smiles; the smile of the lotus blossoms, which were one of his favourites, was no match for divine and bashful smiles of Lakshmi. She was the Mother of the three worlds and the treasure house of riches, seeking the bosom of the Lord of the three worlds. Was this match made in heaven?  Just by casting benign glances the Mother of creation protected the three worlds and their kings.  Soon after garlanding Him, Mahalakshmi took her abode on the chest of Paramatma as all Devas were looking.
Many Buddhists in India mark anniversary of the Emperor Ashoka’s conversion to Buddhism around the time of Diwali. Followers of Jainism believe this to be the day Mahavira attained Nirvana.  at Pavapuri (present day Bihar) on Oct. 15, 527 BCE.
Bandi Chhorh Divas is something that the Sikhs celebrate. On this day, the sixth Sikh Guru (Guru Har Gobind) returned from detention in the Gwalior Fort.
Gurudwara Bandi Chor is built at the place where the Guru stayed during his detention. Jahangir advised Wazir Khan to bring Guru Hargobind in his court at Delhi with great honour. Jahangir had realised that he was wrong for allowing the torture and killing of Guru Arjan Dev , who had not committed any crime or offence. Wanting to exonerate himself of any guilt in the death he indicted the crime on Chandu Shah and other officers. So in order to show his innocence he wanted to meet Guru Hargobind. On meeting with the Emperor, the Guru wasted no time in telling Jahangir that there was no such thing as a bad convergance of the stars.
The Sikhs celebrate this day as Bandi Chhorr Divas i.e., "the day of release of detainees". So in the evening, illuminations are done with "Deeye" (earthen oil lamps), candles and fireworks.
The celebrations are held both in the Gurdwaras and in homes.
Its ending of warm season and beginning of winter. Nature sets itself to darkness representing situations of challenges in life that is neither in your control and  not conducive. This is the time Deepawali is celebrated by lighting lots of lamps symbolizing inner awareness and bliss enlightening our lives with brightness of wisdom.
It is every individuals journey from darkness, ignorance towards brightness, wisdom.
Our prayers for a prosperous and healthy Deepawali for all of you who are so close to us helping in our journey towards Wisdom.
In each legend, myth and story of Deepawali lies the significance of the victory of good over evil; and it is with each Deepawali and the lights that illuminate our homes and hearts, that this simple truth finds new reason and hope. From darkness unto light — the light that empowers us to commit ourselves to good deeds, that which brings us closer to divinity. During Diwali, lights illuminate every corner of India and the scent of incense sticks hangs in the air, mingled with the sounds of fire-crackers, joy, togetherness and hope. Diwali is celebrated around the globe. Outside India, it is more than a Hindu festival, it's a celebration of South-Asian identities. If you are away from the sights and sounds of Diwali, light a diya, sit quietly, shut your eyes, withdraw the senses, concentrate on this supreme light and illuminate the soul.
Live Kali Puja from Dakshineshwar on DD Bangla
Live Kali Puja should be telecast this year, like all years on DD Bangla. I think it should start around 10:30 PM IST tonight, 10th November 2015.
Wanting to do a pilgrimage and visit the Annapurna temple in Varanasi, Rani Rashmani set forth on a pilgrimage. She had a dream where Mother Kali asked her to setup a temple and not go anywhere else.
Rani Rashmani then bought the land of Dakshineshwar and built the temple of Kali there.
Uttam Supriya pair
Unlike Uttam Suchitra, Uttam Supriya were not always portrayed as a romantic pair in the movies they starred in.
I can clearly remember one - Bagh Bandir Khela. Uttam plays a negative role, and Supriya is sort of protagonist in the film.
Another one - I am watching now. Jadi Jantem. This is a thriller and stars Uttam, Supriya amd Soumitra. Seen the first half of the movie, now watching the second half.
There can never be another Uttam. Bad Acting, Good Acting - Uttam went beyond that. Mahanayak.
Supriya started off as a great actress. Meghe Dhaka Taara was something which showed her acting potential.
Somewhere, Supriya became a bit too melodramatic.
But what ever it was, this was the golden age of Bengali Cinema.
Bhoot Chaturdashi
Bhoot Chaturdashi is observed on the second day of Diwali. The  unsatisfied spirits, bhoot, are worshipped.
In some regions people offer food – cooked rice and til to the spirits.
The rituals coincide with the popular Yama Chaturdasi and Naraka Chaturdasi rituals.
This particular ritual is of importance in eastern parts of India.
This slowly gives way to Kali Puja which starts on this day, and ends the next day.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Some celebrate this day as the day of Roop Chaturdashi, and people take bath after applying oil.

A day before Diwali used to be day when all fire crackers were bought.  Last year's leftover crackers were brought out and dried in the afternoon sun.

Evening was a visit to the Kali Bari. Then back home and light 14 lamps to ward off evil spirits.

This was also the day for Choddo Shak (14 different greens).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just one note. There is a puja - Kali Chaudas, which is performed usually in Gujarat. This is different than the Kali Puja in Bengal.
Birth of Kali- Other stories
Apart from the Devi Mahatmayam which talks about Kali coming and killing Chanda and Munda, she also appears in other scriptures.
She, as Mahakali, appears in the begining of Devi Mahatmayam. She is the one who has all under her spell (Maya). And it is to her that the Gods pray so that Vishnu can kill Madhu and Kaitava.
She is the first of the ten Mahavidyas.
The Goddess makes an appearance in the Shiva Purana in a ferocious form. When Sati sacrificed herself, angered Shiva, on hearing this news plucked a lock of his matted hair and dashed it onto the ground. From this hair were born Veerbhadra and MahaKali.
Shiva Puran talks about another take about how Kali was born. This goes back to the tale of the asuras Shumbha and Nishumbha, who have been mentioned in the Devi Mahatmayam. They had a boon that would be killed by a form of Parvati, who was not born from the womb and who had no desires. If the asuras ever looked at this being with passion and desire, they would meet their doom in her hands.
Sitting on the Mandrachal hill one day, Shiva one day told Parvati that her complexion had darkened in the sun, and called her Kali (dark). Parvati then shed this form, Kali, which remained with Shiva and while she became Gauri and killed the demons.
Linga Puran has a different story. There lived a demon named Daruk. He had acquired divine powers by the virtue of his penance. He started tormenting the deitiesand rishis. All the deities went to Lord Shiva and requested him to give protection from  Daruk. Lord Shiva then requested Parvati to help the deities. One part of Parvati's consciousness entered into the body of Lord Shiva. But, the deities were not aware of this happening. Goddess Parvati then attained her physical form with the help of poison stored in the throat of Lord Shiva. The effet of poison had made her complexion dark. Lord Shiva then brought her out from within his body through his third eye.
The deities became frightened after seeing her terrific appearance. She was none other than Goddess Kali. Goddess Kali then killed Daruk with the permission of Parvati. But, even after the death of Daruk, her anger did not subside and the whole world was ablaze due to her anger. Lord Shiva then incarnated as a small child and started crying as if he was hungry. Goddess Kali could not decipher the illusions of Shiva and thought that the child was crying because of hunger. She started feeding the child her breast-milk. In the process of sucking milk, Shiva also sucked out her anger. A similar tale is told about Tarapith, which is located in West Bengal. In Tarapith, they say Shiva became unconscious when he swallowed the poison coming from the cosmic ocean, and became unconscious. The divine mother, then breast fed Shiva, in the form of Tara.
After her anger had subsided Goddess Kali became unconscious. Lord Shiva then performed his famous dance--Tandav  to bring Kali back to consciousness. When Kali regained her consciousness she found Shiva dancing. She too started dancing and this is the reason why she is also called Yogini.
Below is the Adya Stotra, composed by Annada Thakur, who founded the Adya Peeth in Dakshineshwar, West Bengal.
Killing of Narakasura - Kalika Puran
There is a version of the killing of Narakasura which is detailed in the Kalika Purana. Kalika Purana talks about Kamakhya, the goddess of Assam.
It is said that when Vishnu, in his incarnation as the boar, had rescued the earth, a child was born from the union. The time was bad and the child born was destined to be evil. He was born from the earth and was found by King Janaka of Mithila. Janaka brought up the boy. When the boy was sixteen, he was taken to Pragjyotishpur where the presiding deity, Kamakhya (picture below) was worshipped. Shiva secretly lived in that place.
Naraka was advised to reside in the kingdom and rule justly. He was asked to worship Kamakhya and be kind to all holy saints. He was also told that the day Kamakhya vanished from his land, his death would follow.
Sage Vashishtha used to worship in the Sandhyachal hills that lay in the kingdom of Narakasura. One day, he came to visit the shrine of the Mother Goddess. Naraka was not ken on anyone else worshiping the goddess and  expressed his grudge towards the goddess and prevented the sage from visiting the goddess. Consequently, Sage Vashishtha cursed him that the goddess would no longer stay in his kingdom. Narakasura was no longer favored by the goddess.
 Naraka then , in course of time, attacked and stole the ear rings of Aditi, the mother of the Devas,
One night, Naraka observed Goddess Kamakhya dancing in her temple. He was stunned by the beauty of the Goddess, and losing his senses, he approached her and asked to marry him. She laughed at him and told that it will happen if Naraka constructs temple, tank, and stair case from the foot of Nilachal hill to her place, before the cock crow  He started the task and almost completed it. Vishnu appeared in the form a rooster and started crowing, signifying starting of the day. Naraka became frustrated, and stopped. In the mean while the day really came. Naraka failed to reach the goal and got angry on  Kamakhya. Kamakhya disappeared .
In the meantime, Bhudevi, Naraka's mother, who was pained by the sufferings Naraka was causing, started praying to the Gods for his end. Krishna agreed to end Naraka with the blessings of Kalika.
Sri Krishna went with Satyabhama to kíll Narakasura. In the fight that ensure, with the blessings of Kamakhya, Krishna killed Narakasura. When Krishna was about to kill Naraka, the asura saw Kali standing there, sometimes appearing as Krishna, sometimes as Kamakhya.
Seeing her son fall, Bhudevi appeared before Krishna, lamenting the death of her son. She then handed over the earrings of Aditi, that had been stolen by Naraka, to Krishna. Krishna consoled her, saying she herself had prayed for Naraka's end.
Kamakhya is pictured as a  goddess with twelve arms and six heads of varying colors, representing a powerful goddess who is omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent. She is ornately dressed, typically wearing a red sari.
She holds in each of her ten hands a lotus, trident, sword, bell, discus, bow, arrows, club or scepter, goad, and shield. In of her remaining hands, she holds a bowl, and the other hand is for blessings.
She is seated upon a lotus, which emerges from the navel of Lord Shiva, who in turn lies atop a lion.
To each side of her sit Brahma and Vishnu, who are each seated upon a lotus, as well.
Satyabhama - killer of Narakasura - another version - Celebration of Naraka Chaturdashi
While Bhagwad Purana talks about Krishna killing Narakasura, there are other versions from other scriptures. Krishna is present in all of them.
A folk tale tells of Satyabhama taking a form of the Mother Goddess and killing Naraka. As per the folk tale, Naraka had a boon, that he could be killed only by his mother.
Later when he became proud and arrogant, Bhu Devi (Earth) reborn as Satyambhama, killed Naraka while she had accompanied Krishna.
In the war Satyabhama fought with Narakasura valiantly but he was more skillful. After a few days Narakasura got a chance to hurt Krishna. Krishna fainted as per the predestined divinely plan made with Satyabhama. When Satyabhama saw Narakasura attacking Krishna then she got furious.
She doubledher strength and attacked the demon king Narakasura and finally. Before Narakasura`s death, he requested a boon from his mother, Satyabhama that everyone should celebrate his death with colourful lights. Accordingly this day is celebrated as the first day of Diwali or Naraka Chaturdashi.
Narak Chaturdashi - Day Two of Deepawali
While in Bengal, this is the day Kali Puja starts. This year, Amavasya Tithi Begins at 21:23 on 10 th November 2015 and ends at 23:16 on 11 th November 2015.
For Kali Puja, the day when Amavasya starts is considered while for Lakshmi Puja/ Deepawali the day when Amavasya ends is considered. For this, on many days Kali Puja happens a day before the designated day for Deepawali.
This day is also called Bhut Chaturdashi or Kali Chaturdashi. This is the day to abolish and kill off the laziness in our lives.
Some say this is the day when Hanuman gulped down the sun.
There also a legend associated with Bali, grandson of Prahalada. King Bali became the most powerful king on earth. But he became highly arrogant. His form of charity was an occasion for pomp and show and those who went to seek Alms from the king Bali suffered insults and humiliation. His arrogance and misrule ended when the Lord appeared as beggar (vaman avtaar). King Bali asked the dwarf beggar to get anything in his kingdom. Lord replied he just want a piece of land that could be covered in his 3 steps. And with his first step Lord Vishnu covered the entire heaven, with the second step the earth and asked Bali where to keep his third step. Bali offered his head and became spiritually enlightened. The Narak chaturdashi day therefore is dedicated to lights and prayers and the elimination of greed.
Here in South India, this is supposed to be the day when Narakasura was killed.
Celebrated as the second of the auspicious Deepavali days, Narkachaturdashi originates from days of Lord Krishna. God Yama is also worshiped on this day to get over the fear of demon Narakasura. Lamps with four wicks are lighted at various places. People make an effigy of Narakasura, carry it to the outskirts, and burn it. Later, they take bath and burst crackers. This is the day of Narakasura's death and hence a celebration for all.
From the Bhagwad Puran - Krishna kills Narakasura
It is said that Narakasura was the son of the earth, by Vishnu, in his incarnation as a boar. He became a demon due to the bad association of Bana, another demon. It is mentioned in the Bhagwad Purana, Birth alone is not always the criterion of goodness; unless and until one is trained in the culture of good association, one cannot become good. Thus Narakasura became a demon even though he was born good. Narakasura was also called Bhaumasura, as he was born from Bhoomi (earth).
He was a powerful demon. He stole Varuna's umbrella, Abhoga. Abhoga, fashioned from a cobra's hood such that no water could penetrate it. He also stole the divine earrings from Aditi, the mother of Devas. He would forcibly kipnap damsels and hold them captive.
Hearing this complaint by Indra, Krishna, accompanied by His wife Satyabhama, immediately started for the abode of Narakasura. Both of them rode on the back of Garuda, who flew them to Pragjyotisa-pura, the capital city of the demon. It was not a very easy task to enter the city , as it was very well fortified. First of all, there were four formidable forts guarding the four directions of the city, and it was well-protected on all sides by great military strength. The next boundary was a water canal all around the city. The next fortification was of anila, a gaseous substance. After this, there was a network of barbed wiring constructed by a demon named Mura.
When Krishna arrived, he broke all the forts to pieces by the strokes of 'gada' (club, called Kaumodaki) and the constant onslaught of the arrows . With his Sudarshana Chakra, he destroyed the channels of water and the gaseous boundary. By the vibration of His conchshell, He not only broke the hearts of the great fighters, but also the fighting machines which were there. Similarly, the walls around the city were broken.
The demon Mura heard the vibration of the conchshell, awakened from his sleep, and  came out to see what was happening. He had five heads and had long been living within the water. The Mura demon was as brilliant as the sun at the time of the dissolution of the cosmic manifestation, and his temper was like blazing fire. His body was so dazzling that it was difficult to see him with open eyes. When he came out, he first took out his trident and began to attack Krishna.  First of all he attacked  Garuda, by whirling his trident and he began to vibrate sounds through his five faces like the roaring of a lion. The roaring produced by the vibration of his mouths spread all. Krishna saw that the trident of the Mura demon was gradually rushing toward  Garuda. Immediately, by a trick of His hand, He took two arrows and threw them toward the trident, cutting it to pieces. Simultaneously, he pierced the mouths of the demon Mura with arrows stopping the noise and shot down the trident.
Mura demon immediately began to strike Krishna with his club. But Krishna, broke the club of Mura to pieces . Mura then began to attack Krsna with his strong arms, but by the aid of his discus. Krishna killed Mura. From then on, Krishna became known as Murare.
Seeing this. Narakasura came out and immediately released a weapon called Sataghni, by which he could kill hundreds of warriors with one stroke, and simultaneously all his soldiers also threw their respective weapons at Krishna. Krishna countered all the weapons, and all soldiers fell dead.
Taking a trident in his hand , the demon hurled it towards Krishna which was cut off by Sudarshan Chakra. Krishna then killed Narakasura by cutting off his head.
Dhanatrayodashi - Dhan Teras Day One of Deepawali
As is commonly seen, a word in Sanskrit may have many meanings. So while DHAN commonly means WEALTH, there are other root words for DHAN.
So Dhanteras has different meanings depending on the way of looking at.
DHAN - Wealth
TRAYODASHI - Thirteen (Trayodashi is now called Teras in Hindi, so DHAN TRAYODASHI became DHAN TERAS).
DHANUS may mean a bow but it also has links with surgery and DHANYAN means desert.
So the word DHANTRYODASHI has many meanings. The thirteenth day , day of wealth.
This is also called as the birthday of DHANVANTARI - God of Medicine. The one who has seen the end (anta) of DHANUS (Surgery) is DHANVANTARI.
The word dhanvan means a desert -  dhanvachara meaning, he who moves in a desert). DHANVANTARI  is like the oasis in the desert of worldly existence.
Many meanings and many legends.
Once there was a young prince and his death was predicted by a snake-bite on the fourth day of his marriage, which happened to be two days before the new moon, on the thirteenth day, or a trayodashi.. On that particular day, his newly-wed wife did not allow him to sleep. She laid out all her ornaments and lots of gold and silver coins in a heap near the entrance of their sleeping chamber and lit lamps all over the place. Then she narrated stories and sang songs to keep her husband from falling asleep.
At the stroke of midnight, Yama, the God of Death, reached the palace in the guise of a snake to kill the prince. But Yamraj’s eyes were blinded by the dazzle of the Diyas. This prevented him from entering the room of the prince
When the attempts to enter the room failed, Yama hid near the ornaments and coins, thinking that the prince might come there to look at the valuables.
But the clever young bride did not allow the prince to venture out. Instead she said interesting stories and songs. The prince was glued to the stories and did not move from the place. Yama also forgot about his mission listening to the songs and stories. Soon the sun appeared and Yama returned disappointed.
This incident is celebrated as Yamdeepdaan. The tradition of burning lamps through the night on the day is dedicated to Yama.
Dhantrayodashi is also considered the birthday of Dhanvantari. This is the day when is supposed to have arisen , when the cosmic ocean was churned for nectar. Considered an incarnation of Vishnu, he is depicted,  clad in bright yellow silk, He is depicted with four hands- the upper pair of hands carrying sankha and chakra, and the lower pair, a leech and pitcher. Interestingly, the leech was part of the doctor’s kit in olden days since it was used to suck out impure blood from the patient‘s body. Even now, extract from its saliva is used to prevent clotting.
People start preparing for this day few weeks in advance. Houses and shops get cleaned and decorated. The special colorful patterns are laid out near the entrance of the house. In some regions, lamps lit are dedicated to dead ancestors and floated down a river or pond.
On this day, Hindus purchase gold, silver and other utensils. Many people begin the purchase for Diwali celebrations on this day. Crackers, candles, lamps and other items needed for Diwali are purchased on this day.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Some also celebrate this day as the birthday of Lord Kubera, who is the God of Wealth.

Dhan is wealth. Life is wealth.

So lets cherish the life we have, the wealth of life.

Happy Dhanteras.

Diwali or Deepawali

In practice, the Diwali celebration starts on DhanTeras (13th day from full moon) until the second day of Karthik New Moon.
In South, NaraChatrudashi is the real Diwali. This is also the day when Kali Puja is done in Bengal.
Diwali is big festival for the Business Class who end their Fiscal year a day before Diwali and worship Lakshmi for a start of a promising year.

Some people say Diwali is the day Rama returned to Ayodhya after his exile. Some people believe this to be the day Rama was crowned king.
As the dwarf, Vamana, Vishnu is supposed to have conquered the asura king Bali, on this day.
Some say this is the day Lakshmi emerged from the cosmic ocean and chose Vishnu as her husband.
Like on Mahalaya, this is also the time to pay respect to the departed souls.Some say the lights and firecrackers are a way to show the departed, a path to heaven.

Gambling has entered to Diwali. Folk tales talk about the game of dice was created on this day by Shiva. Skanda Purana talks about the twelve boards on the dice board :

The universe is the board. The months are the squares.The playing pieces are the lunar days (dark and bright both) and the sun's path northwards is one dice and the path southwards is another dice.

Five Days - Five Festivities. Five Rituals. Five Legends.

Tomorrow (09th November 2015) starts the first day - Dhanteras.
